Choosing from a steakhouse menu

Compare cuts, portions and included sides.

Read the cut description

Compare the cuts and preparations actually listed on the menu. Ask staff to explain unfamiliar terms and describe what you enjoy. A familiar cut name alone does not tell you everything about the restaurant portion or serving style.

Check the complete plate

Find out whether the stated portion includes a bone and whether sides or sauces are included. Some menus list these separately. Compare the complete meal you intend to order rather than assuming the headline steak price covers the whole table.

Discuss preparation with staff

Explain your preparation preference and ask how the restaurant describes its options. Mention ingredient restrictions before the order is prepared, including sauces and accompaniments. Let staff explain the available choices rather than inferring them from photographs.

Confirm extras before ordering

Ask about supplements, substitutions and any quoted specials before committing. Repeat the cut, preparation and sides when placing the order. If you are sharing, confirm the service arrangement so everyone understands what will arrive.
